Fall Weekend Getaway

Fall Weekend Getaway

Rapid City and the Black Hills are stunning year round, but come autumn, the hills burst with spectacular fall color. As yellows and reds dot the Ponderosa Pine covered hills, you won’t want to miss a beat. Follow this Fall Weekend Getaway Itinerary for easy planning.

Day 1

Fall Weekend Getaway

Early Morning

Plan on getting up early and take a short drive to Pactola Reservoir for morning fishing. The crisp air and uninterrupted calm will make a perfect setting for rainbow, brown and lake trout to bite. If you’re not a fisherman, rent a kayak, canoe or paddle board to really experience the 14 miles of shoreline and crystal clear 150 foot depths.

Afternoon

Take a scenic cruise through Vanocker Canyon and Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway – both known for jaw-dropping views. As you pass through Spearfish Canyon, don’t forget to stop and take in the sights at Bridal Veil Falls, Spearfish Falls, and Roughlock Falls along the way. If you’re up for a little adventure, plan on sticking around to hike. The canyon is filled with both well-known and hidden trails worth stumbling upon.

Evening

After a long day of adventures, make your way back to Rapid City for downtown dining. Stop down at Murphy’s Pub and Grill for some delicious food and drink and maybe even catch some live music. If you’re feeling fancier, plan on fine wine and an exceptional atmosphere at Delmonico Grill. After dinner take a stroll through downtown and enjoy attractions like Main Street Square and the City of Presidents.

DAY 2

Weekend getaway

Mid-Morning

Get ready for another day of exploration on 18 miles of developed trails right within the city. At Hanson-Larson Memorial Park Trail Network, you can bike or hike among a vast sea of trees with a promising city view. Skyline Drive Wilderness Area guarantees a similar experience. The 3-mile trail system is perfect for advanced riders looking for a challenge. For something more of a leisurely, rent a B-Cycle for sidewalk cruising to many Rapid City attractions.

Mid-Day

Head downtown and stop at Firehouse Wine Cellars for unique, local wine. Be sure to ask to take a tour of the winery to see how it’s made. Right next to the winery, you’ll find Firehouse Brewing Co. This restaurant and brewery is housed in Rapid City’s original fire station. Plan to grab lunch and an original brew.

Evening

Later in the evening, make your way down to Hay Camp Brewing Company. Named after Rapid City’s original name, Hay Camp brings you original brews that vary in bitterness to your liking. If you love IPA’s try their centennial IPA that is designed to showcase the flavorful hops grown in the area.

Night

Your last stop will be Lost Cabin Brewing Company. This local brewery, located just off Omaha Street lets you sample all of the beer they have on tap. If you have a small group, try one of their four or eight fights. Larger groups can get away with a 12 flight for a full experience.
